Alex Venezia is an American representational painter born in Virginia Beach in 1993.

He is primarily self-taught and first discovered the power of art during a high-school lesson on chiaroscuro while studying Caravaggio. He frequented the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk to study and copy the Masters. He has sought out and studied classical technique with many top representational painters, including Odd Nerdrum, Colleen Barry, Daniel Sprick, Michael Klein, and Jeff Hein.
He currently lives and maintains a studio in Raleigh, North Carolina.
“Inspiration comes in many forms, and usually far from the easel, but there’s nothing like seeing the work of an artist that you hold in high regard in person. It has a way of putting me in my place and motivating me to become a better painter.”
In 2017, he took home the first place prize in the Still Life Competition at the prestigious Grand Central Atelier in New York. He was featured in Southwest Art Magazine’s “21 Under 31: Young Artists to Watch” in 2016 and in a BuzzFeed article on artistic prodigies. His work references a melancholic narrative and sensitivity to color nuance in light and shadow.
A fear of committing to one style led him to study with several painters rather than attend an academy.
He now works alongside painters Michael Klein and Louis Carr in Raleigh. He produces work and teaches occasionally. His paintings are represented nationwide and he has recieved numerous awards. He continues to develop his craft and explore themes of light, shadow, and emotion. His art is a testament to his dedication and his unique vision.
