Mark Cross is a New Zealand artist born in Auckland in 1955.

He began making art during his mid-teens and moved to the island of Niue at age 23 with his family. He established a strong philosophical and stylistic foundation during his early years on the island. He was disillusioned with the institutional nature of the New Zealand art scene. The isolation of Niue provided both inspiration and freedom to develop his work in an individualistic way. He returned to New Zealand in 1982 to find a market for his work. He has since become one of the South Pacific’s leading realist artists.
He divides his time between studios in Niue and New Zealand.
His work is highly detailed and creates a timeless, lateral world. His figures are integrated with the landscape, reflecting a philosophy of ecological consciousness. He has also established a sculpture park in the Niue rainforest. He collaborated with his wife and other artists to create the “Shrine to Abundance” installation. His paintings are held in private and corporate collections across Australasia, America, and Europe.
He has won numerous awards, including the Bledisloe Medal for Landscape.
He was a finalist in the Team MacMillan Ford Art Award and recieved a merit award in the Birkenhead Trust Art Award. He has also been highly commended in the Adam Portrait Prize. His work has been exhibited widely in solo and group shows. He has been featured in publications and has written extensively about art. His contributions to the art world are significant and enduring.
