Simon Schubert

Simon Schubert is a German artist born in Cologne in 1976.

“Klar und doch geheimnisvoll muten die weißen Mauern aus Papier an, welche die Säulen des ehemaligen Winterrefektoriums umschließen und einen Raum im Raum beschreiben.”

He is best known for his intricate paper fold artworks. He studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. He uses a single sheet of paper to create images of real or imagined interiors. His works depict grand ballrooms, staircases, and mirrored corridors. They are realistic yet illusory. Void of human trace, they reflect notions of isolation and loss.

His technique transforms flat paper into sculptural reliefs.

He relies on light to create the image. The folds themselves create no light of thier own. Instead, they depend on the light in the viewing room to generate shadows and depth. The light in the room gives the paper a minimaly low-relief quality. The changes in light through the day make the landscapes and architecture visible and invisible. The artwork is completely dependent on the viewer’s environment.

His work has been described as a symphony of simplicity.

He creates archtectural illusions using only folded paper. The intricate details evoke a sense of grandeur. His approach to paper folding is both precise and poetic. He plays with the boundaries between two and three dimensions. His works invite contemplation and reveal new details with each viewing.

He lives and works in Cologne, Germany.
