Jamie Salmon is a British-born sculptor working and living in Vancouver, Canada. He is most known for his hyperrealist sculptures of the human form. Salmon’s sculptures are both startling and uncanny, almost lifelike in their representation.
Salmon’s earliest work in art began as a commercial artist and sculptor working on film and special effects. He later made the transition to fine art and began to create his own work in the hyperrealist style for which he is now known. He is completely self-taught and works from a place of concept and narrative within each sculpture.
Salmon states that the idea behind each piece is as important as the finished product. His subjects are often used to explore social norms of identity and appearance. He is known for his ability to show the subtleties of skin tone, expression, and form in his sculptures using a variety of media such as silicone, resin, and even real human hair.
The works often feel as if they are real humans, but with a disconnect that inspires a psychological impact in the viewer. Salmon’s sculptures have been exhibited worldwide in galleries from Istanbul to Copenhagen to Sydney to Mexico City.
