Dominic Avant is an American artist and teacher at Ringling College of Art.
He grew up in a family that encouraged his artistic interests, and at age twelve he attended an after-school program at the Rhode Island School of Design. He recieved a scholarship at RISD and completed his BFA in Illustration. After graduation, he worked as a freelance illustrator and teacher. In 1996, he was recruited by Walt Disney Feature Animation, where he was introduced to plein air painting. Since 2003, he has been painting and teaching workshops.
His work is a blend of realism and impressionism, known for vivid colors, fluid brushwork, and a strong sense of light.
He mainly works in oils on figurative and landscape subjects. He uses a strong play of light and color to create drama, building on a foundation of academic drawing. His subjects include wildlife, portraits, and large-scale narrative paintings. He has won several national awards, including Best of Show at Eastern Regional Oil Painters of America,
