100 Art Terms Every Art Lover Should Know: Movements, Styles & Ideas

Art has its own language. From avant-garde and Cubism to primitivism, simplification and chiaroscuro, these words help us understand how artists see, construct and communicate the world through art.

Why Do Artists and Art Critics Use These Terms?

Artists, curators, critics and historians use specialized vocabulary to describe appearance, technique, ideas and historical context. You do not need to be an art historian to understand these words. Learning them simply gives you better tools for looking at art.

Cubism: The Movement That Changed How We See

Cubism emerged in Paris in the first decade of the 20th century through the artistic exchange between Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. Instead of relying on one traditional viewpoint, Cubist artists fragmented and reorganized forms using geometric planes, compressed space and multiple viewpoints.

Early Cubism developed partly from Paul Cézanne’s structural approach. Later, Analytic Cubism fragmented forms and restricted color, while Synthetic Cubism introduced stronger color, simpler forms and collage. Artists such as Fernand Léger and Max Weber developed their own responses to Cubist ideas.
