Scott Burdick

Scott Burdick is an American painter known for his expressive portraits and travel‑inspired scenes, shaped by a lifelong curiosity about people and places. Born in Chicago in 1967, he grew up drawing constantly, encouraged by parents who helped him see art as a way to escape long hospital stays and turn simple shapes into something alive on the page.

His early training began in high school.

He studied life drawing at the American Academy of Art with Bill Parks, a teacher who pushed him to work harder and believe in his own ability. Burdick often said that Parks filled him with the discipline he needed at a young age. After finishing the Academy, he continued studying at the Palette and Chisel Art Club, where he met his wife, painter Susan Lyon. Painting side by side became part of their daily life.

His ideas come from everywhere.

He is drawn to the beauty of a young face, the strength in an older one, the quiet of a farm at sunset or the story behind a stranger he meets on the road. Travel became both a reason to paint and a reward for painting. A critic once said his work “carries the warmth of a moment noticed with real attention,” a simple line that fits the spirit of his art.

Burdick believes the artist’s job is to recognize what moves them.

Some paintings begin with a sudden spark, while others require long research before the first stroke. He uses his technical skill to pass that feeling to someone else, hoping the viewer senses the same spark he felt. Today he and Susan live in rural North Carolina, surrounded by forests and the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, a quiet home base between their travels.

“Art becomes a journey when the heart follows what the eyes notice.”

Soft light settles on a wandering face,
holding stories in a gentle space.
Colors drift where memories stay,
shaped by roads that fade away.
Brush and thought move slow and true,
finding meaning in what feels new.
And in his work the world appears,
a quiet mix of hopes and years.
