Photographs of the Scottish Landscape, ranging from the Lowlands, through the Central Belt and the Trossachs, to the Highlands and Islands.

Scenic/Architectural Photographs of some of the Cities, Towns and Villages of Scotland.
I’m an award-winning photographer based near Glasgow who, although having been doing photography of one form or another for the past 30+ years, has only converted to digital photography in the last few years.

My photographic philosophy is quite simple, and is based upon a quotation from Ansel Adams: “There are no rules for good photographs, there are only good photographs”.

Although my portfolio is fairly wide-ranging, my passion is HDRI landscape photography and, in that respect, I’m fortunate to live in one of the most photogenic countries in the world.

For those who might be interested:

My hardware is:

  • Canon EOS 7D (The best APS-C format camera around)
  • Canon EOS 450D (I thought it did everything I wanted from a camera .. until I saw the 7D!)
  • Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 EX DC HSM Lens (Pin sharp – cheaper than Canon equivalent)
  • Canon 17-85mm F4-5.6 IS USM Lens (Excellent workhorse)
  • Canon 70-300 F4-5.6 IS USM Lens (Images can be a bit soft)
  • Manfrotto 488RC4 Ball Head (Invaluable)
  • Kennett Benbo Tripod (Heavy, but versatile and steady as a rock)
  • Manfrotto 190CX PRO4 Tripod (Marginally less versatile than the Benbo, but very much lighter)

My software is:

  • Adobe Photoshop CS5 [Mac Version] (As good as it gets, but needs plenty of RAM)
  • Photomatix Pro 4.1 [Mac Version] (Nothing else in the same price range even comes close)
  • Digital Photo Professional (Freebie with Canon DSLRs)

There is no particular theme to the images: they are, simply, an eclectic collection of scenes and subjects which have caught my eye over the years. For ease of searching and navigation, they have been grouped in galleries according to the general location in which they were taken. Where particular genres or themes are appropriate, however, further gallery categorisation has been done.

Visitors to this site should note that, with few exceptions, the images are not “straight out of the camera” renditions of a scene or subject, and they most certainly do not represent the “capture of a moment of time” beloved of many photographers. They are, first and foremost, PICTURES in which the camera, the photographic technique and the subsequent processing have been used simply as tools to produce the desired end result. The images, therefore, range from “travel brochure” crowd pleasers right the way through to the distinctly impressionistic in which all the power of Photoshop has been unleashed!

In particular, the majority of my images have been produced using the High Dynamic Range Imaging (HDRI) technique. Whilst the very mention of HDRI has been known to engender a state of apoplexy in some members of the photographic community, who regard it as an abominable affront to the “purity” of the photographic process, this photographer believes that, providing it is used sensibly, sensitively and as a means to an end rather than as an end in itself, this technique produces images which most closely mirror the way we, as humans, see the world. I leave it to you, the visitor, to judge!
