What a great photographer Jord is. Almost all of his shots that he shared on Instagram are eye candy and never a repeat from other photographers. I spent good hour browsing through his album, despite the post duplicates, may of you should follow his profile. He has great photography future.

Here is Jord Hammond short biography:

Jord Hammond is a 25-year-old freelance contemporary travel photographer and storyteller from the UK. After living and working as a teacher in South-West China for a year, he developed a passion for photography which has led him to all corners of the earth; from the mountains of Peru to the rivers of Varanasi in India and everything in between.

Jord’s use of colour and light brings a fresh new perspective to the world of travel photography, which has landed him jobs with some of the biggest travel brands out there. Through documenting the people and places he encounters on his travels to some of the most remote regions of the world, Jord has built an engaged community on social media, and strives to encourage people to explore more for themselves.

Jord Hammond Q&A:

Do you sell prints?
Yes, my prints are finally for sale! You can visit the ‘PRINTS’ section on the drop-down menu at the top of the page to order prints online, or alternatively click here.

What’s in your camera bag?
You can find the complete list of my travel photography gear here.

How do you edit your photos?
I predominantly use Adobe Lightroom to edit my photos, coupled with Adobe Photoshop if I need to tidy up an image. I often use my own presets, with both desktop and mobile versions available here.

Do you offer any workshops?
I most certainly do! I hosted a workshop in Peru this summer, and will be hosting another in Jordan later this year. Any further workshop release dates will be updated on my website, so stay tuned!

Where are you from?
I’m from the sunny town of Dover, on the South-East coast of England.

How old are you?
I’m 25-years-old.

How many countries have you been to?
I have been to 41 countries and counting! I have revisited a lot of countries over the past couple of years, so looking forward to heading somewhere new soon.

How did you get started with photography?
I began taking photos whilst working as a teacher in China back in 2015 as a means of showing my family and friends what I was up to out there. My work schedule allowed for me to travel regularly so I was able to practice photography as a hobby whilst seeing some of the most beautiful parts of China. I saved up enough money whilst in China to take six months off to travel through Asia, which is where I began taking photography more seriously. I started my ‘career’ in photography whilst travelling by offering small companies free photo shoots in order to build my portfolio, and from there, began offering paid photography services once my portfolio and Instagram following was big enough.

Did you study photography at university?
No! I studied marketing and advertising at university, and picked up photography after I had graduated. I don’t believe you need a formal education in photography in order to be successful, but it definitely wouldn’t hurt. That being said, becoming a photographer involves a passion and an eye that university classes may never be able to give you, and you can definitely learn by yourself too.

How do you afford to travel so much?
I work, funnily enough! The majority of my income comes from taking photos for marketing campaigns for different companies, through selling my presets and prints, personal photo shoots, and writing articles and blog posts for different magazines and publications. And, instead of spending the money I earn from this on material possessions, I choose to spend it on travel. I’m also lucky that I am able to do my job from anywhere in the world, so that’s a big bonus.

Which are your favourite countries to travel to?
China has to be my all-time favourite place to travel. The landscape is so diverse, making it a true photographers dream. The food is also amazing and it is still relatively untouched by foreign tourists, making it feel like much more of an adventure.

What’s on your bucket list?
As Asia has been my playground for the last 3 years, I’m really excited to travel to some different parts of the world soon. If I had to pick the places I’m most excited to see, it would be Namibia, Banff, Iceland and Patagonia.

Is photography the right career for me?
I can’t stress enough the importance of passion and determination when pursuing a career in photography. Only pursue a career in photography if you truly love it and can’t see yourself doing anything else, as it can be a difficult career path to choose. Learn how to market yourself and your services, as the beginning of your career will involve a lot of emails and pitching yourself to different companies. With travel photography especially, you’ll need to be able to function on four hours sleep and make the most of sunrise and sunset, as these times have the best light to shoot in . Be creative, explore the world around you, don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and above all, work very hard!

One piece of advice for an aspiring photographer?
My one piece of advice would be to differentiate yourself from others. With the boom of social media, photography is quickly becoming an oversaturated market and the only way that you will get your name out there and ultimately get work is to be different. If someone sees a photo for the first time and can say “hey, that’s definitely a photo by Jord,” because it is recognizably my style, I’d consider it a job well done.

What does your typical work day look like?
I would usually wake up 1-2 hours before sunrise to make sure I am at a good spot for shooting when the sun starts to come up. I’d then head back to my hotel for breakfast and a shower, followed by a long day of the business side of my job. That could be anything from editing for myself/clients, replying to emails, managing my Instagram account, planning the next photography spots, meetings… you name it. I try to listen to a podcast over lunch, go for a walk or do something to take my mind off of work. I will then go to a different location for sunset, eat dinner at around 8pm, and get a few more hours editing done in the evening before bed.
