An image shows what a work looks like, but a profile explains who made it and why. Story, training and process give collectors a personal way into the art.
This article explains why artist profiles matter, what a good one includes, and how they help collectors and everyday art lovers engage more deeply with the work they admire.
Questions and Answers
Why do collectors care about an artist’s story?
Knowing who made a work, where they trained and what drives them adds meaning beyond appearance. In Artsy’s 2019 collector survey, 78% named aesthetics the most important factor, but 58% were motivated by subject matter or narrative and 43% by the artist’s background; only 17% bought without considering content or artist background.
Do artist bios really help sell art?
Artsy’s Gallery Report 2025 says artist bios convey credibility, especially for emerging artists, though it gives no percentage. Art Basel and UBS’s 2025 collector survey also found buyers averaged seven studio visits in 2024 and planned eight for 2025, which the report reads as a demand for authenticity and intimacy.
What should a good artist profile include?
A clear biography, training, key themes, materials and process, notable exhibitions or awards, and a link to the artist’s official website. Our profiles of Dusan Djukaric and Mary Whyte follow this approach.
Does process matter?
Yes. Explaining techniques such as drybrush or glazing helps collectors appreciate craft. See our watercolor painting guide and our oil painting guide for background.
How should a profile treat what is unknown?
Honestly. For example, the profile of Misulbu explains that the name means “art club” and that no biography is public, rather than inventing one.
How do profiles help readers find artists?
Clear, well-organized pages with accurate facts are easier for readers, and for search tools, to understand and cite. Internal links between profiles and articles also help visitors explore related work.
