Alfred Guillou

Master of Maritime Realism Paintings

Alfred Guillou was born 1844 in Concarneau, a french coastal town. He painted fisherfolk and their goodbyes, like in “Adieu!” a sad farewell scene, probably a sailor leaving his family. His style was realist, focused on emotion, not fancy stuff. The painting hits you with that uncertainty of life at sea. Guillou ain’t famous today, but his work still matters for capturing breton coastal life raw and real.
