Rachid Talbi Painting

He invariably manages to intrigue us, all the more so as his way of painting is quite unique. Using the material copiously, he frankly sculpts the canvas, blurring the shapes, making them merge.

The painter synthesizes to the extreme. He sums up, making his work easier to read. The detail is not his preference, because it distracts attention from the essential, from the real nature of things and their essence. Talbi proceeds when necessary, by allusion and metaphor.

Rachid Talbi is one of the painters who are out of the ordinary. Its primary reference is orientalist painting. As nothing is created ex-nihilo, the incandescent atmosphere of some of his paintings is reminiscent of that of the orientalists, the luminous atmosphere is reminiscent of the impressionists, the nervous touch and the full body work evoke the stroke of Van Gogh‘s tormented brush.

Indeed, Rachid Talbi, like a silversmith who chisels the material, gives the impression of cutting and engraving in the substance to such an extent that one can no longer distinguish whether he is working with a brush or a knife. Probably both at the same time. The chiaroscuro that Rachid Talbi likes is obviously borrowed from Caravaggio.

This artist is self-taught, as were the impressionists in painting, or Rodin in sculpture; As such, its inspiration is innate and not dependent on the cannons of a teaching which can prove to be restrictive and even sterilizing if it is badly assimilated.

Talbi is concrete proof that self-teaching is as fruitful as studying in an institution. Better still, it is endowed with a singular originality, which only freedom from laws and postulates can allow.
