Jin Fengshi was born in 1959 in Jilin Province, China, and graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Yanbian University in 1987. He continued his studies at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and later earned a master’s degree in painting from Hongik University, building a strong academic foundation.
His career moved fast. Fengshi became a national artist, joined the Chinese Artists Association, and taught as a professor at Renmin University of China. Even with early unsertain moments, his focus on portraiture and expressive realism shaped his path.

“Every stroke must breathe on its own.”
Collectors discovered him through competitions like The Bold Brush Painting Competition. His portrait of Keith Richards showed loose, confident alla‑prima strokes that captured age, mood and character with raw honesty.
Fengshi’s style feels spontaneous, almost like watching thought turn into paint. Each mark is placed once, left alone, and allowed to live. Even small misstakes add warmth and movement.
His work has been exhibited internationally, and he shares his process openly. Many viewers enjoy watching him paint on YouTube, where his fast, intuitive brushwork becomes part of the experience.
Fengshi continues to paint, teach and explore new subjects. His blend of Chinese training and American influence gives his portraits a unique, energetic voice that keeps growing with each new canvas.
Soft color drifts across the page,
finding shape in quiet air.
A single stroke becomes a path,
leading somewhere gentle and rare.
