Anna Bocek was born in 1970 and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk, Poland.

She is a painter, set designer, and co-founder of the design group Substance. She has had numerous solo and collective exhibitions in Poland, the USA, Germany, Sweden, Spain, France, the UK, Italy, Austria, Greece, the Czech Republic, and Taiwan. Her work is deeply influenced by theater, which she considers her primary source of inspiration. She is fascinated by human beings existing in theatrical space and their peculiar nature.
Anna Bocek does not try to reconstruct or comment on reality. Instead, she considers her paintings as studies of emotions and sensual experiences, treating them as an intimate diary of human complexity and diversity. Her work is expressionistic in spirit, driven by a deep psychological fascination with people. She captures gestures, grimaces, and emotional states with a kind of feminine intuition, creating a gallery of dreams, depressions, pride, and melancholy.
Her figures and faces are a response to modern life in megacities, where we pass by hundreds and thousands of human faces, each with its own history and individuality. She tries to extract differentiating and outstanding elements that form an icon in modern times. Unlike Andy Warhol, who reproduced what was popular, she uses strong expressionist techniques to leave a permanent trace in memory. Her work is perverse, ironic, and witty, adding true value to her studies of faces and figures.
Her paintings remind us that painting means reflection, not production. She uses colour and light contrasts boldly to draw psychological or social situations of people depicted. Her work has been recognized by critics, including novelist Pawel Huelle, who wrote about her ability to extract the most interesting elements from the flow of modern visual information. She continues to live and work in Gdansk, Poland, creating art that challenges and inspires.
